Guess we'll all be going out to the grocery store to buy the latest Hip Hop Weekly Magazine!!
HHW: What made you decide to put out the mixtape, A Prelude To A Tell Tale Heart?
DAWN RICHARD: First of all, I’ve had a hard six years. I’ve had a lotta up’s and down’s. This was a chance for me to voice everything that I’ve been feelin’. I’ve always been goin’, goin’ goin’. After Hurricane Katrina I lost everything, and then I was in Danity Kane and I had to go right into my career, so I didn’t have time to grieve then. And then Danity Kane broke up, and I didn’t get a chance to take it all in because I wanted to make sure that I had a job, so I was on my grind, and then I joined Dirty Money and I spent three years grinding. I never had to tell my story, I just had to work, work, work, and in a group you can only tell half your story, because there are other people in a group who have to tell their story as well. Being that I recorded with both groups, I decided to give those fans who stayed with me and supported me an opportunity to hear my story in my own words. It was kinda like therapy for me, so that people can hear the journey I’ve gone through from the source. You never hear me by myself – you hear me in a group.
What did you want to tell?
I wanted people to know who I was. Sometimes you get lost in a group; there’s a perception that there’s only one idea about who people think you are. I needed more than that. If you hold things in for a long period of time, it becomes overwhelming to you. I’m a person who holds a lotta things in, so this mixtape is like my diary – it’s therapy. A lotta women have gone through what I’ve gone through: a brown-skinned woman, dealing with devastation, people who’ve been in relationships that haven’t gotten them right. I wanted a mixtape that was relatable.
