Here's more: Dawn Richard is an multi-talented singer, songwriter, and dancer. Formerly of the platinum-selling girl group Danity Kane. Dawn is currently holding it down at 1/3 of the group Dirty Money, along with label head Diddy and another singer/songwriter named Kalenna Harper.
Dawn Richard can easily be considered Diddy’s Secret Weapon. She has giving him hit after hit since he discovered her on Making The Band 3 back in 2005. She has effortlessly been his right-hand since the break-up of Danity Kane. Dawn opens up to Bleu Magazine’s own, Monte’ Alexander, about her journey with Diddy & her rumored solo project in 2011, and much more.
Bleu: How has the experience been working with Diddy as a group member as opposed to him just being your boss?
Dawn Richard: Its been like going to college. I’m learning more about the business and myself as a musician. i get the chance to see different sides of him… as a father, a businessman , a producer, etc… its a more inside look…. he is a partner now.. instead of just a boss..
Bleu: How has the experience working with Kaleena?
DR: I love Kaleena, she is basically my other half, my yang (laughs) … I think her and I will have a long friendship because we share the same passion for music and art. Diddy knew what he was doing when he put us together.
Bleu: “Last Train To Paris” has seen multiple pushbacks. What was the cause of the delay?
DR: Greatness takes time, is all I going to say. But it’s coming, please believe that.
Bleu: Who did you work with on the album?
DR: We worked with the most amazing artist and producers in the game right now. Our collabs range from Justin Timberlake to Bilal, Lil Wayne, Drake, Nicki Minaj. What I appreciate about the features is that they aren’t done in the typical way. We wanted to create a different look for “Last Train to Paris“. For example; Lil Wayne took a spoken word approach to one of our records, his delivery and timing is so amazing on the record.
Bleu: We know you wrote on the second Danity Kane album, how important is it for you to have creative input in the material you perform?
DR: I just think putting your heart and input on a record creates a honesty that people can relate to and understand. It becomes you and not something forced or conformed you know.
Bleu: Now your third single is “Loving You No More” featuring Drake. Has a video been filmed yet? If so, when can we expect it?
DR: We are shooting it in the coming week. It will be Magic…
Bleu: Do you feel any pressure for Dirty Money to succeed because of how Danity Kane ended?
DR: I never put the two together, I try to never compare them. Danity Kane succeeded in doing what we did. It was a great run. Dirty Money is a separate journey and I think it will succeed too. God is real and he hasn’t let me down yet.
Bleu: This summer, rumors surfaced of you releasing a solo album in 2011. Is there any truth to that rumor? If no, will you ever release a solo album?
DR: Yes, after Dirty Money both Kalenna and I will have solo projects. Its no secret. Dirty Money will take over the world, All of us..(laughs)
